Harriette
Arrington is currently serving as the Dean of Academic Programs at Paul
D. Camp Community College in Suffolk, Virginia. Prior to this new
venture, she served as the literacy coordinator for Newport News Public
Schools (August 2004). In June of 2003, Dr. Arrington founded Libra
Literacy Consulting, an organization devoted to professional development
for teachers. From 1994-2003, she was an associate professor of
Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at the University
of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky. In addition to teaching undergraduate
and graduate level elementary and middle school courses at UK, she
coordinated student teaching and practicum programs. Dr. Arrington has
had varied professional work experiences including: district supervisor
for Reading/Language Arts in Newport News, Virginia, reading resource
teacher, and classroom teacher.
She received her B.S. degree from Virginia
State University, M.A. degree from Ohio State University, and her Ph.D.
from Purdue University. Her publications include a co-authored chapter
on literacy assessment in Best Practices in Literacy Instruction
(Guilford Press, 1999). She also has authored two picture books, The
Heart of a Friendship, released in 1997, and Friends Again? (2001), both
by Pelican Publishers. In addition to being a children’s author, she is
an accomplished storyteller and has performed around the country.
Dr. Arrington is an active member of
several professional organizations including the National Middle School
Association (NMSA), International Reading Association (IRA), Kentucky
Reading Association (KRA), and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
She was the 2002-03 President of KRA and serves on the storytelling
committee for NCTE.
Through private consulting, university
work, conference presentations, and consulting for the Southern Regional
Education Board (SREB), Dr. Arrington has provided numerous schools and
organizations with language and literacy workshops, lectures, and
demonstration lessons. She frequently makes national, state, and local
presentations in the areas of storytelling, African-American literacy,
reading in the content area, motivating/engaging instruction, and best
practices in literacy instruction and assessment.
